2020 Toyota Supra

Toyota released a concept car named FT-1 (Future-Toyota 1) back in 2014. Its aggressive styling immediately sparked thoughts of a new Supra.

Now, 21 years after the Japanese brand took their beloved sports car off the road, the Supra is back. Toyota unveiled the all-new Supra at the Detroit Auto Show in mid-January.

The Supra is being made alongside the new 2019 BMW Z4. Both the Z4 and Supra will be built at the same plant in Austria, close to BMW’s headquarters in Munich, Germany.

The new Supra will be powered by BMW’s turbocharged 3.0-liter inline-six engine, which produces 335 horsepower and 365 pound-feet of torque. An eight-speed automatic is the only available transmission.

The Chevrolet Corvette, which should be one of the Supra’s main rivals, produces 455 horsepower from its base engine. The Porsche Cayman makes 300 horsepower in its base configuration.

The interior of the Supra is eerily similar to that of a BMW, but that is to be expected with Toyota getting help from the German brand. The two-seater will feature BMW’s iDrive controller and central touch screen. A large, single digital gauge shows the pertinent performance information, like the tachometer.

Expect the Supra to be available later in 2019. The sports coupe is expected to start at just under $50,000. If that’s out of your price range, there’s always the 86.
